Hello! I’m Dr. Anna Zeide (pronounced “AH-nuh ZAY-de”), Associate Professor of History and founding director of the Food Studies Program in the College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences at Virginia Tech (as of August 2020).
I study the history of food, environment, consumerism, and justice. My first book focused on the history of canned food, to understand the deepest roots of the American food industry, Canned: The Rise and Fall of Consumer Confidence in the American Food Industry (California Studies in Food and Culture, University of California Press, 2018). It won the 2019 James Beard Award for Reference, History, and Scholarship. Read more about Canned.
I’m now working on an edited anthology (about the making of modern food), a popular and classroom text (US History in 15 Foods), and a book project on the history of food waste.
